Banana Harvesting Training at PT Rocky Lintas Utama Farm

With only four months remaining, preparations are underway for our inaugural banana harvest. To ensure success a two-day training session was conducted on December 9-10, 2023, at PT Rocky Lintas Utama's farm in Yogyakarta. The session brought together agronomist staff, representatives from the Argo Makmur Lestari Forest Farmer GroupKTH), and PT Rocky's plantation team.

The first day focused on pre-harvest techniques like injecting young banana pods and wrapping banana bunches with protective plastic to keep the fruit smooth and scratch-free. Guided by Mr. Wahyudi and Mr. PT Rocky’s experienced staff. The participants got the theory lesson and applied the techniques directly in the field.

The second day’s training focused on harvesting techniques and post-harvest fruit handling. Participants were instructed on the proper method to harvest bananaes transport them to a temporary shelter. In the temporary shelter the bunches carefully separated into individual hands. Subsequently, we were fortunate to receive permission from PT Roky to visit their production. We observed how the fruit is handled with great care to maintain its quality. The fruit is cleaned to achieve a smoother appearance and then packed according to standardized procedures.

As an output for this training season, we are developing a practical guidebook for Banana Cultivation and harvesting technique. Outlining best practices for banana care and harvesting. This book supports agronomists and farmers at the agroforestry demonstration plot in Besole, Tulungagung, and helps ensure consistent quality across future harvests.

Through this program, JNBS equips agronomist staff and farmer representatives with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful harvest. We’re excited to see the impact of these efforts as we approach April 2024! 🚀🍌
